How to get here, there, and just about everywhere...

Air Travel:

Charlottesville (CHO) has its own airport which is served by several major airlines including United, Delta, USAirways, and Northwest. The airport is located approximately 10 minutes North outside of town, just off of Route 29. There are also a number of car rental agencies that work out of the airport and it's very easy to go in and out of this airport.

Not surprising, it costs a bit more to fly into Charlottesville. If you're looking for a better deal, you may want to try Richmond (RIC) which is about one hour away and, if you're really up for it, Dulles (IAD), which is about a two hour(+) drive.

Our favorite airfare search engine these days is www.mobissimo.com which searches all of the other major airfare websites for the best deal.

Driving Directions

Unfortunately, the State of Virginia forgot to hook up the center of the state with the rest of the state except for the Capitol, so unless you're coming from Richmond on Interstate 64, the roads are a bit slower down here. The major route into town from most directions is Route 29 which is a two lane highway with occasional stoplights.

If you're coming from points north (Washington or down I-95) (and good luck to you if you are), take I-495 into Virginia, then go I-66 West. At Exit 43A, take 29 South towards Gainesville and Warrenton. Be careful as Route 29 crosses 66 twice and you want the 2nd exit. There will also be a small sign letting you know that this is the exit for Charlottesville. Stay on 29 for about 1.5 hours and you will enter Charlottesville.

If you're trying to get to the Cavalier Inn, then just stay on Route 29 business. After you go under the Route 29/250 bypass, the Route 29 Business road changes names from Seminole Trail to Emmet Street. No worries, stay on it. Approximately 3-4 miles later, the Cavalier Inn will be on your right at the corner of Ivy Road and Emmet Street.

If you're coming from Richmond, you're going to want to take I-64 West. Charlottesville has several exits that will take you into town.

If your destination is the Cavalier Inn, exit I-64 at Exit 118 onto 29 North. Exit Ivy Road/US-250 East toward town, turning right onto Ivy. After about 1 mile, the Cavalier Inn will b e on your left at the Corner of Ivy and Emmet Street.

If you're coming from the West, such as Kentucky, take I-64 East. You'll hit several exits for Charlottesville. To get to the Cavalier Inn, take exit 118B towards Charlottesville onto Route 29. Exit Ivy Street/US-250 East, turning Right. The Cavalier Inn is located approximately 1 mile ahead on the left, at the Corner of Ivy and Emmet Street.

How the heck do I get around Charlottesville?

Okay, despite the fact that Jefferson founded and designed the centerpiece of Charlottesville, the City seems to have forgotten what good design is over the past 200 years. As a result, none of the streets make sense and will inevitably either change name and or direction several times while you are driving on them. The only grid pattern you'll find is in the historic downtown area. Don't worry too much because you'll eventually get the hang of it. Plus, in many areas there are either Vs painted on the pavement to direct you to the University or there are signs with the three Presidents (Jefferson, Madison and Monroe) to direct you to downtown. Everything else is likely located on Route 29. Stick by these simple rules, and you'll likely be okay. Below are some maps to help you:

How do I find the wedding ceremony and reception?

These are the best questions and you will likely need a map to find your way. The ceremony and reception are within relatively close proximity to each other and we'd recommend people walk between them. The ceremony is on the UVa grounds in one of the gardens that were a part of Jefferson's original design for the University. Unfortunately the gardens are not well marked and while just off the main Lawn of the University, can be hard to find. The reception will be a short walk away to the area known as "the Corner" which is on University Avenue. We are currently working on maps ourselves as the University for some reason has poor cartographers.

Where should we park for the wedding festivities?

Because it will be a Sunday, you can park virtually anywhere on the UVa grounds for free. We also recommend you park around "the Corner" business district since this is close to the ceremony and where the reception will take place. The Corner Business District is located on University Avenue adjacent to the UVa Grounds, and all along University Avenue you will encounter several signs for parking. You can take advantage of any of these and still be within walking distance of the action.

How do I get to Jonathan, Lily and Wicket's house?

2512A Fontaine Avenue
Like the rest of Charlottesville, our place is not so easy to find, but we will make it as painless as possible. Unfortunately, all the internet maps are just slightly off for our place, so just bear with us while we describe it below. We live on a relatively major road, Fontaine Avenue, which is also Route 29 Business.

From the North: Take Route 29 South, taking the 29S Bypass once in Charlottesville. It will be a right lane exit just after the KFC and Best Buy. After you pass the bridge with "Virginia is for Lovers" (or "Losers" as it may now say) painted on it, you will exit at Fontaine Avenue approximately 1 mile later. At the stop sign, turn Left onto Fontaine Avenue. Go approximately 1/2 mile through the stop light and past Westerly Road. Immediately afterwards on the right there will be a small break in the sidewalk which is our driveway. There unfortunately is no address on the street. Park in one of the 6 parking spaces and we are the first townhouse on the left. If you've reached Summit Road, the BP Station or Piedmont, you've gone too far.

From the East, West and South: Exit I-64 at Route 29, taking exit 118B towards Charlottesville. Take the first exit, Fontaine Avenue. Turn right onto Fontaine Avenue and continue straight through the stop light. After the light you'll pass Westerly Road.

From the Cavalier Inn: Continue on Emmet Street, going South. Follow Emmet Street and the signs for 29 Business as the road bends to the left. At the light after the road bends, continue following 29 Business to the Right. You will now be on Jefferson Park Avenue (JPA). At the next light, continue straight even though JPA will turn left. You are now on Fontaine Avenue. After approximately 1/2 mile you will pass a UVa sign on the Right saying "Piedmont" and on the left there will be Summit Road. Just ahead there will be a yellow "Keep Right" sign. At this sign there will be a small driveway on the left. Turn into it. This is our place with 6 parking places. Park, and find us in the 1st townhouse on the left. If you reach Westerly Road or the stoplight at the Fontaine Research park, you've gone too far.

From Downtown: Take West Main Street towards the University. Turn left onto Jefferson Park Avenue (JPA) when you reach the hospital. When the road opens to two lanes, stay in the left lane and turn at the light, following JPA. At the next light, go straight (even though JPA turns left), you will now be on Fontaine Avenue.
